Your first indoor cycling class

A rider pauses with a towel mid class in the dim, teal lit room on Riverside

Before you clip in

Your first ride at Sculpt x Cycle Riverside starts before the music does. Show up about fifteen minutes early, so the studio can slow down for you instead of the other way around. There is no membership to buy first and nothing to figure out on your own beforehand. The current offer is your first class for ten dollars, a thirty minute ride built to introduce you to the room without asking for a full hour of your evening.

Tell the desk it is your first time. That one sentence changes the whole visit. You will get pointed to a bike, walked through the basics, and given time to ask the questions everyone has but nobody says out loud in a group class. There is no test to pass here. The only job on your first visit is to show up and let the studio meet you where you are.

Wear something you can move in and bring water if you have a favorite bottle, though the studio is not asking you to arrive with special gear. If you already have cycling shoes, bring them. If you do not, that gets sorted at the desk before you ever sit down on the bike, so there is nothing to prepare in advance beyond showing up a few minutes ahead of the room filling in.

Getting your bike set up

Every bike on Riverside takes cycling shoes with SPD or Delta cleats, and the fit of that bike matters more than most new riders expect. A seat that sits an inch too low can turn a forty five minute class into a knee ache by the second song. This is why the desk sets your bike up with you rather than pointing at a chart and walking away. Seat height, how far forward or back the seat sits, and where the handlebars land all get dialed in together, on your bike, while you are standing next to it.

If you do not own cycling shoes yet, ask the desk about shoe rental when you book. Either way, nobody expects you to already know what a Delta cleat is. That is the desk's job to explain, not yours to research beforehand. Once your shoes are clipped in and your seat and bars are set, that fit is yours to remember for next time, so the second visit moves even faster than the first.

What the room feels like

Twenty seven bikes fill the room on Riverside Avenue, arranged around a podium at the front where your instructor rides and calls out the class. The lights run low and the sound runs loud, closer to a small venue than a gym floor. It reads dramatic from the doorway and makes complete sense two minutes into your first song. Nobody in that room is watching you. Every rider in front of you spent their own first class figuring out the same clip in, the same seat height, and the same first few pedal strokes before the beat found them.

You will notice the podium first, a raised spot at the front where the instructor rides facing the room instead of standing off to the side. That is deliberate. The class is led from inside it, not narrated from a stage, and it is a big part of why a Sculpt x Cycle class feels less like a workout video and more like something happening to the whole room at once.

The ride itself

A Cycle Classic class, the format most first timers land in, mixes sprints, hills, jogs, and a little choreography, with your instructor calling out challenges to keep the energy moving. You set your own resistance and your own pace the entire time. Nobody times your split or ranks your effort against the rider next to you. The class is built to push you if you want to be pushed and to meet you gently if that is what the day calls for. Both are the same class. The difference is entirely how hard you turn your own knob.

Other formats run through the week too, from a shorter Cycle Pump ride with an added strength push to Sculpt Cycle Fusion, which pairs cardio on the bike with strength work off it. None of that matters on your first visit. Start with whatever class fits your schedule and let the instructor's cues carry you through the rest.

After you unclip

You will be sweatier than you expect for a thirty minute class, and that is the point. Grab water, catch your breath, and know that the bike you rode is the same bike every regular on Riverside rides. Come back for a drop in, a pack, or a monthly ride, or come back for the ten dollar offer again if once was not enough to decide. Either way, the desk already knows your name, and the bike you rode will remember you too.
